Introducing Monthly Life Lists: Fun, Free and in Your Neighborhood

Are you tired of reading about other people’s adventures and ready to start living your own? This month I am running an experiment by publishing a Life List that is meant for people who are just getting started with their own bucket list goals. Each item on this list is meant to be fun, free and something that you can complete locally.

If you are intrigued by the Life List lifestyle, this is your chance to try out the process without having to fully commit (or tattoo!) yourself. Find a friend, set aside some time and use this an excuse to go adventuring. If you get a good story out of completing any of these items, come back to this post and feel free to share your experiences with the community.

If the feedback from this experiment is good, I’ll continue creating new lists every month.

Monthly Life List: March 2014

The following is a life list that is meant to be fun, free and something that you can do locally. The only guideline is you should aim to finish as many items as possible by April 6th 2014.

  • Cancel a reoccurring bill
  • Meditate for 10 minutes
  • Write a poem about a stranger
  • Go to a park or wilderness area that you have never visited before
  • Write a haiku for a friend
  • Borrow a physical book from a library or friend
  • Contribute to a wikipedia article
  • Write 1,000 words to your future self
  • Donate an item to charity
  • Eat a childhood meal with a friend
  • Smile at a stranger until they smile back at you
  • Teach someone a new skill
  • Send a nice and unexpected email
  • Look for old friends on Facebook

The Deadline

No Life List would be complete without a deadline. This monthly life list’s deadline is:

April 6th 2014

Would you Like to see More of These?

This first list is an experiment. If you would like to see more of these in the future, please let me know in the comments below!

Great idea. I’m printing this off and will let you know how many I have accomplished by April 6th.

    • Sweet!

Looking forward to hearing your progress! :-) Also, I’ll make a note to look into making printer-friendly versions of these.

      Good luck!

  • Brian

This sounds like such fun! I definitely need more adventure in my life, so I’m jumping on board with you! I’m printing the list and finish all of it before the dead-line. :D

  • Rachel

Most definitely! I’ve got my own little “be a little happier” list that I try to do each day, but I love your perspective and the fresh ideas! Also I love your blog and am sorry I’ve pretty much only been stalker-ish and never commented :) I love what you are doing!

    • Thanks Rachel :-)

Is that list online by chance?

      • Rachel

It’s not. Its really just a list of little things that make me feel good, but usually get pushed aside for other, less fun things (i.e. calling/emailing a friend or family member, setting aside time for creative thinking, dancing around like a fool while listening to an awesome song).

  • Terrific idea Danny! I haven’t written a haiku since high school, so I’m looking forward to that one.

    • I reread that comment twice to check if it was a haiku itself :p

  • sam

this is a great idea, I really like this list and will try to do as much of it as I can this month.

  • Kate L.

Fantastic idea! Yes, please do more!

    Thanks! Kate

  • Love this idea! Got a bit of a hectic month ahead of me already, but going to try and squeeze in as many of these as I can. Have been meaning to get to the library for a while so that’s a definite!

    • Let me know how it goes!

      • Only managed three of these, but did include the post in my monthly round up :)

  • Amazing. Love this!

  • Thea Macaraeg

This is always a great “to do” way to start!

  • Angie

Just found your page and love this idea. I just started my own 40 (or more) before 40 list so I’m always looking for more fun adventures. I work in a library and have a book checked out right now so one down!

  • Marta

    I’m in!! :D

  • Pamela

Hi! I’m from Brazil and just found your page.
    I’ll try too!

  • Alisa McRee

Definitely trying this! I’m 10 days down but I’m still going for it!

  • Yes would love to see more monthly lists! A fun way to start living. Hoping me and the family get bug to go big!

  • Kate L.

Writing this on March 30th – I came back to report that I’ve done 4 items off the list, and am happy to see that I mis-remembered the deadline. Since I have until April 6th, I can get a couple more done – I’ll be back!

    • :-) Excellent! Glad you made that happy mistake! Looking forward to hearing about your progress!

  • What a clever idea! I’m super excited to try too–a huge fan of lists:-)

  • Cool idea for breaking a list down into achievable items for a month. A few months ago, I finished my list of 101 things in 1001 days, and I haven’t been accomplishing much since then! This approach could be perfect for me because I don’t want to start a whole new 101 list.
